Risk management is assessing the "unknowns" across a business' entire landscape and planning to minimize the adverse effects of possible unknown events. Agricultural producers face risks every day on farms and businesses. Therefore, it is important to understand the risky environment and identify acceptable strategies, processes, and tools to manage those risks. This course seeks to equip producers with an understanding of the full range of risk management tools and strategies to lessen adverse consequences of changing prices for inputs and products, weather, pests, diseases, employees, etc.
The “Agribusiness Way” is a course that shall provide students with a solid foundation of agriculture taxation (Schedule F), business entity structure (as it relates to tax purpose only), financial statements, agriculture payroll, training to undeserved producers in various states to minimize their financial and operational risks. This short course provides the foundational knowledge required to understand the current U.S. crop insurance industry as it is today. You will learn about the history of the industry, beginning with the first experimental crop insurance program in 1899, the modern-day structure of the public-private partnership between the private insurance industry and the federal government, and the reason for premium subsidies as a crop insurance cost-share program. Those who complete the course should be able to explain basic definitions and concepts that apply to all aspects of U.S. crop insurance.
